Civil War Collectible Major General John A. Dix

John A. Dix (1798-1879) held a stellar career as Major General during the Civil War, and serving as Secretary of the Treasury in 1861, U.S. Senator, and the Governor of New York.

As Secretary of the Treasury, Dix sent a telegram to Treasury agents in New Orleans ordering: "If any one attempts to haul down the American flag, shoot him on the spot." The telegram was intercepted by Confederates, thus never delivered to the Treasury agents. However, the text did find its way to the press and Dix became one of the first heroes of the North during the Civil War.

Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railroad Company Issued to Mabel G. Bell

The Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway was one of the largest railroads in the United States. The brainchild of Cyrus K. Holliday, the company was first chartered in February 1859.

Although the railway was named in part for the capital of New Mexico, its main line never reached there as the terrain made it too difficult to lay the necessary tracks; rather, the Santa Fe was ultimately served by a branch line from Lamy, New Mexico.

In 1873, the Santa Fe's first tracks reached the Kansas/Colorado state line and expanded to reach Pueblo, Colorado, by 1876. In order to help fuel the railroad's profitability, the Santa Fe wisely set up real estate offices and sold farm land from the land grants that the railroad was awarded by Congress, thus creating a demand for transportation wherever its lines ran.

State: Kansas
Years: 1888
Stock issued to Mabel G. Bell (1857-1923), wife of Alexander Graham Bell.

Collectible US Steel Stocks and Bonds

Andrew Carnegie (1835-1919), Manufacturer and Philanthropist. Began an illustrious career as a bobbin boy at age 13, then became a self taught telegrapher with the Pennsylvania Railroad. In 1853-65, he introduced use of the Pullman sleeping cars, organized the military telegraph department, and was active in transporting troops during the Civil War. After leaving the railroad, he focused on iron and then the steel industry.

His policy of “putting all his eggs in one basket, and then watching the basket” was extremely successful.

By 1889 steel production in the U.S. was first in the world, and in 1901 he sold his company, Carnegie Company to the U.S. Steel Corporation for $250 million. The Carnegie Foundation of New York donated millions to scientific research, the advancement of teaching, the furthering of international peace, and the reward of heroic acts. The foundation is well known for building public libraries. This historic bond is dated 1901, the very year that he sold his company. This beautiful $100,000 5% United States Steel Gold Bond is issued to Andrew Carnegie, but not signed. The rarity of Carnegie stocks and bonds is well known. A while back, two signed examples of this bond were sold to collectors at $125,000 per bond! Neatly stamp and hole cancelled. The graphics and cranberry red color are truly exceptional. Fresh Excellent Condition. A portrait of Carnegie is included.

If we had to pick the top 10 U. S. stocks or bonds of all time, this would be one of our top choices!

Signed Antonio Lopez Santa Anna Bond

Antonio de Padua María Severino López de Santa Anna y Pérez de Lebrón (21 February 1794 – 21 June 1876),[1] often known as Santa Anna[2] or López de Santa Anna, was a Mexican political leader, general and President who greatly influenced early Mexican and Spanish politics and government. He first fought against the independence from Spain, and then supported it.

Santa Anna rose to the ranks of general and president at various times over a turbulent 40-year career. He was President of Mexico on seven non-consecutive occasions over a period of 22 years.

Santa Anna boldly signs this extremely graphic bond. It is without doubt the most impressive and ornate of all autographed stock or bonds. This $500 bond was issued in 1866 from New York City while Santa Anna was living in exile. While he schemed to depose Emperor Maximilian, he issued these bonds in hopes of regaining power. In these attempts, he was captured and sentenced to death. Still, he was released and allowed to retire to New York and later when blind, he died in poverty and neglect. Of course, we remember him because of his success over the Texans at the Alamo and later his defeat and capture by Sam Houston at San Jacinto in 1836.

Found in an old leather container in Texas, this Santa Anna signed American bond is fully issued, uncancelled, has no folds, has full margins and is in Superb condition.

Collectible William Tecumseh Sherman Autograph

One of America’s greatest army officers, William Tecumseh Sherman (1820-1891) was born February 8, 1820 at Lancaster, Ohio, and graduated from the U.S. Military Academy in 1840.

He served as a General in the Union Army during the American Civil War (1861–
65), for which he received recognition for his outstanding command of military strategy as well as criticism for the harshness of the "scorched earth" policies that he implemented in conducting total war against the Confederate States. Military historian Basil Liddell Hart famously declared that Sherman was "the first modern general." He is also known for his "March to the Sea.".

Oliver Wolcott Jr. (1760 – 1833) was United States Secretary of the Treasury from 1795 to 1800 and governor of Connecticut from 1817 to 1827. Wolcott was appointed in 1784 as one of the commissioners to mediate claims between the U.S. and the state of Connecticut. After serving as state comptroller of Connecticut from 1788-90, he was named auditor of the federal treasury, and became comptroller of the Treasury in 1791.He was appointed Secretary of the Treasury by George Washington in 1795 to succeed Alexander Hamilton, but resigned in 1800 due to unpopularity, and a particularly vitriolic campaign against him in the press in which, among other things, he was falsely accused of setting fire to the State Department building.

As Secretary of the Treasury he designed the United States Civil Flag. From 1803 to 1815 he operated in private business in New York City, afterwards retiring to Litchfield. He was elected governor in 1817 as a "Tolera
tion Republican", following in the footsteps of his father and grandfather, and serving ten years in the post. His tenure was noted for the economic growth and moderate policies that attended it. Additionally, he presided over a convention that created a new state constitution in 1818.

Wolcott died in New York City and is interred at East Cemetery in Litchfield. Prior to his death, Wolcott had been the last survivng member of the Washington Cabinet.
