Collectible Confederate Bond Collection

On Tuesday, November 24, 1987 Sotheby’s of London auctioned a large archive of Confederate bonds. The lot was described as “A major and extremely extensive archive of unredeemed bearer bonds issued by the Confederate States of America between 1861 and 1864, comprising over 87,000 individual certificates for numerous Loans authorized by Acts of The Confederate Congress.” This exceptional holding represented the entire surviving portfolio of Confederate Bonds. controlled by United Kingdom Trustees since the 1880s. The original objective of the Trustees was to get the Southern States debt paid following the Civil War. Of course, this dream had long since been abandoned.

One of the key collectors of Confederate bonds in the U.S. in the 1980s and 90s was Frederick R. Mayer of Denver, Colorado. His goal was to create world class collections that could be turned into books or catalogs, thus adding to the knowledge and pleasure of future collectors. That is exactly what Mr. Mayer accomplished with his extraordinary collection of Confederate bonds. Many of the great rarities were used to provide the plate illustrations in Ball’s “Confederate Bonds” book.

Recently, we were fortunate to purchase a large segment of Mr. Mayer’s collection of Confederate bonds. John Slidell - Confederate Cotton Loan - £500 

Jan. 29, 1863 Act, Criswell-118, Cotton Loan Bond issued in Europe by J. Henry Schroder & Co. and Emilie Erlanger & Co. Tri-valued at: 500 Pounds Sterling-12,500 French Francs-20,000 pounds of cotton. A key attraction of the Confederate bonds was that they were “cotton backed” and were exchangeable into New Orleans middling cotton at a rate of six pence sterling per pound (at a time when the going rate in England was better than twenty pence per pound). The catch was that the Confederate government undertook to deliver this cotton to one of its ports only after peace had been made -- while the war endured delivery had to be taken inland with the would-be recipient also having to run the Union blockade to get the cotton out.

Signed by John Slidell, a U.S. and Confederate diplomat whose seizure with James M. Mason precipitated the Trent Affair during the American Civil War. Printed on quality heavy watermarked paper, very ornate engraved bond (the most attractive of all Confederate issues) with Liberty holding Confederate “Stars and Bars” leaning on bales of cotton and gazing across the sea. Collection of 5 Different Civil War Related Documents

This collection representative of the Civil War includes 10" x 13" card stock portrait of Abraham Lincoln, Cleveland and Toledo Railroad Co. Stock, 5 1/2" x 8 1/2" portrait of Stonewall Jackson, 3" x 1 1/2" Thirty Dollars Confederate Bond, and a 6 1/2" x 13 1/2" print of the Gettysburg Address. The American Civil War (1861–1865), often referred to as The Civil War in the United States, was a civil war fought over the secession of the Confederacy. In response to the election of an anti-slavery Republican as President, 11 southern slave states declared their secession from the United States and formed the Confederate States of America ("the Confederacy"); the other 25 states supported the federal government ("the Union"). After four years of warfare, mostly within the Southern states, the Confederacy surrendered and slavery was outlawed everywhere in the nation. Issues that led to war were partially resolved in the Reconstruction Era that followed, though others remained unresolved.
