1773 Insurance Promissory Note
This 1773 Insurance Promissory Note may possibly have been signed by John Coffin at the age of 17, but would require further research. We do at least know this is a rare Boston insurance related note of 1773.
John Coffin (1756-1838), Massachusetts Loyalist, had gone to sea as a boy and by the time he was 18 was given command of a ship. In 1775, his ship took part in bringing nearly a whole regiment under General Howe to Boston. He fought gallantly at Bunker Hill for the British. Later, it is said that the Colonials offered $10,000 for his head. In the War of 1812 he raised 700 men.
At his death in 1838, he was the oldest general in the British army! A John Coffin signed this very early “Promise to pay to Nathaniel Barber, or Bearer” 1773 Premium of Insurance note. Likely to insure cargo of a ship. It would be especially exciting to verify whether this is the very same Coffin. Regardless, this is the earliest American Insurance related piece we’ve had.
Year: 1773
Rare! Choice Condition!

Samuel Blodget Autograph Blodget Canal Company
Samuel Blodget (1724-1807) Merchant, Manufacturer, Canal Builder. Promoter of the first stage line between Haverhill and Boston, MA and a farmer in Goffstown, NH.
In 1794 he began construction of a canal around the Amoskeag Falls of the Merrimack River in NH to facilitate movement of his timber to the markets. After raising money through lotteries, the locks were finally completed in 1806 and the canal was officially opened on May 1, 1807.
His son was Samuel Blodget Jr. (1757-1814), Merchant, Economist, Architect, Captain of the NH Militia. He designed the building of the first Bank of the U.S. in Philadelphia, one of the finest early Federal architects. He was a major figure in developing the Washington real estate market through lotteries, which led to his discredit and imprisonment for debt. Sam Jr's life is often compared to that of Robert Morris, famous financier of the Revolutionary War, who also gained fame for his successful projects, but who died impoverished.
This 1799 stock is made out to the son and signed by his father as President. Rare!!
State: New Hampshire
Year: 1799
