Historic Rare US Steel Bond

Andrew Carnegie (1835-1919), Manufacturer and Philanthropist. Began an illustrious career as a bobbin boy at age 13, then became a self taught telegrapher with the Pennsylvania Railroad. In 1853-65, he introduced use of the Pullman sleeping cars, organized the military telegraph department, and was active in transporting troops during the Civil War. After leaving the railroad, he focused on iron and then the steel industry.

His policy of “putting all his eggs in one basket, and then watching the basket” was extremely successful.

By 1889 steel production in the U.S. was first in the world, and in 1901 he sold his company, Carnegie Company to the U.S. Steel Corporation for $250 million. The Carnegie Foundation of New York donated millions to scientific research, the advancement of teaching, the furthering of international peace, and the reward of heroic acts. The foundation is well known for building public libraries. This historic bond is dated 1901, the very year that he sold his company.

This beautiful $100,000 5% United States Steel Gold Bond is issued to Andrew Carnegie, but not signed. The rarity of Carnegie stocks and bonds is well known. A while back, two signed examples of this bond were sold to collectors at $125,000 per bond! Neatly stamp and hole cancelled. The graphics and cranberry red color are truly exceptional.

Fresh Excellent Condition. A portrait of Carnegie is included. If we had to pick the top 10 U. S. stocks or bonds of all time, this would be one of our top choices!

John Edgar Hoover (January 1, 1895 – May 2, 1972) was the first Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) of the United States. Appointed director of the Bureau of Investigation—predecessor to the FBI—in 1924, he was instrumental in founding the FBI in 1935, where he remained director until his death in 1972.

Hoover is credited with building the FBI into a large and efficient crime-fighting agency, and with instituting a number of modern innovations to police technology, such as a centralized fingerprint file and forensic laboratories.

This is an exquisite signed portrait of J. Edgar Hoover and a Christmas card with printed signature.

Francis Hopkinson Signed Bill of Exchange

Francis Hopkinson signed Bill of Exchange. Francis Hopkinson, signer of the Declaration of Independence, signs this bill of exchange as Treasurer of Loans. Francis Hopkinson (September 21, 1737 – May 9, 1791), an American author, was one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence as a delegate from New Jersey. He later served as a federal judge in Pennsylvania. His supporters believe he played a key role in the design of the first American flag.

Francis Hopkinson was born at Philadelphia in 1737, the son of Thomas Hopkinson and Mary Johnson. He became a member of the first class at the College of Philadelphia (now University of Pennsylvania) in 1751 and graduated in 1757, receiving his masters degree in 1760, and a doctor in law (honorary) in 1790. He was secretary to a Provincial Council of Pennsylvania Indian commission in 1761 that made a treaty with the Delaware and several Iroquois tribes. In 1763, he was appointed customs collector for Salem, New Jersey. Hopkinson spent from May 1766 to August 1767 in England in hopes of becoming commissioner of customs for North America.

Although unsuccessful, he spent time with the future Prime Minister Lord North and his half-brother, the Bishop of Worcester Brownlow North, and painter Benjamin West. After his return, Francis Hopkinson operated a dry goods business in Philadelphia and married Ann Borden on September 1, 1768. They would have five children. Hopkinson obtained a public appointment as a customs collector for New Castle, Delaware on May 1, 1772. He moved to Bordentown, New Jersey in 1774, became an assemblyman for the state's Royal Provincial Council, and was admitted to the New Jersey bar on May 8, 1775. He resigned his crown-appointed positions in 1776 and, on June 22, went on to represent New Jersey in the Second Continental Congress where he signed the Declaration of Independence. He departed the Congress on November 30, 1776 to serve on the Navy Board at Philadelphia. As part of the fledgling nation's government, he was treasurer of the Continental Loan Office in 1778; appointed judge of the Admiralty Court of Pennsylvania in 1779 and reappointed in 1780 and 1787; and helped ratify the Constitution during the constitutional convention in 1787.

On September 24, 1789, he was nominated by President George Washington to the newly created position of judge of the United States District Court for the District of Pennsylvania. He was confirmed by the United States Senate, and received his commission, on September 26, 1789. As a federal judge, Hopkinson died in Philadelphia at the age of 53 from a sudden epileptic seizure. He was buried in Christ Church Burial Ground in Philadelphia. He was the father of Joseph Hopkinson, member of the United States House of Representatives and Federal judge.

First National Bank of Morristown Check signed by Thomas Nast

Collectible First National Bank of Morristown check signed by Thomas Nast.

Thomas Nast (September 27, 1840 – December 7, 1902) was a German-born American caricaturist and editorial cartoonist who is considered to be the "Father of the American Cartoon." Among his notable works were the creation of the modern version of Santa Claus, and Uncle Sam (the male personification of the American people), as well as the political symbols of both major United States political parties: the Republican elephant and the Democratic donkey.

Born in the barracks of Landau, Germany (now in Rhine Palatinate), Nast was the son of a trombonist in the 9th regiment Bavarian band. The elder Nast's socialist political convictions put him at odds with the Bavarian government, and in 1846 he left Landau, enlisting first on a French man-of-war and subsequently on an American ship. He sent his wife and children to New York City, and at the end of his enlistment in 1849 he joined them there.

Thomas Nast's passion for drawing was apparent from an early age, and he was enrolled for about a year of study with Alfred Fredericks and Theodore Kaufmann and at the school of the National Academy of Design. Nast attended school in New York City from the age of six to fifteen, when he was forced to drop out due to financial problems. Thomas had problems adjusting to life in America and never took well to school. He spent his entire school career on the verge of flunking out and consequently was not an especially good speller. After school he started working in 1855 as a draftsman for Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper; three years afterward, for Harper's Weekly.

More history included with check.

Civil War Flag Remnant

The basic fighting unit for the infantry during the Civil War was the company. Companies generally consisted of 100 men but were seldom up to strength due to casualties and illnesses. The staff of a company comprised of a Captain, who commanded, a 1st Lieutenant, 2nd Lieutenant and two Sergeants, and several Corporals. Infantry companies were joined together with other companies to form battalions or regiments. Generally, there were eight companies to a battalion and ten companies to a regiment (the Union sometimes used twelve) and were designated with letters from the alphabet such a "A", "B", "C", "D", etc. (The letter "J" was not used because it looked too much like the letter "I".) The regiment was the primary fighting force for both the Union and the Confederacy during the Civil War.

This flag remnant came from a 34 Star Union flag that was used during the Civil War. The brass infantry horn insignia was worn by Union Infantrymen on their kepis. It is an authentic Civil War infantry horn that originated from an old board discovered after the War in Philadelphia. The photo shows Confederate infantrymen making a charge at the Battle of Gettysburg.

Collectible Confederate Bonds

On Tuesday, November 24, 1987 Sotheby’s of London auctioned a large archive of Confederate bonds. The lot was described as “A major and extremely extensive archive of unredeemed bearer bonds issued by the Confederate States of America between 1861 and 1864, comprising over 87,000 individual certificates for numerous Loans authorized by Acts of The Confederate Congress.” This exceptional holding represented the entire surviving portfolio of Confederate Bonds. controlled by United Kingdom Trustees since the 1880s. The original objective of the Trustees was to get the Southern States debt paid following the Civil War. Of course, this dream had long since been abandoned.

One of the key collectors of Confederate bonds in the U.S. in the 1980s and 90s was Frederick R. Mayer of Denver, Colorado. His goal was to create world class collections that could be turned into books or catalogs, thus adding to the knowledge and pleasure of future collectors. That is exactly what Mr. Mayer accomplished with his extraordinary collection of Confederate bonds. Many of the great rarities were used to provide the plate illustrations in Ball’s “Confederate Bonds” book.

Recently, we were fortunate to purchase a large segment of Mr. Mayer’s collection of Confederate bonds. If you would like to add to your collection or if you would like to start a collection, this offering will give you an opportunity to buy some great bonds. Please contact us via e-mail, or call 1-800-717-9529  and ask for George if you would like to build a fine collection of Confederate bonds. www.glabarre.com">http://www.glabarre.com, or call George LaBarre at 1-800-717-9529.
